Stefanie Dazio is digital-first reporter who uses old-school, shoe-leather reporting online and in print. She’s most comfortable sitting on a curb at a crime scene, scribbling barely-legible notes and shooting photos and videos on her cellphone.

Stefanie is a crime and criminal justice reporter at Newsday (Long Island, N.Y.). She previously covered the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County for the paper.

She covered law enforcement, crime, fires and escaped animals as a breaking news reporter at The Record and The Herald News (New Jersey) from 2014 to 2016. She transformed the “morning mayhem” beat by making sources in more than 100 police forces and 100 fire departments across North Jersey. She regularly broke news, both in small crime briefs and larger enterprise pieces, and wrote multiple stories a day.

Stefanie graduated magna cum laude from American University in May 2013. She had multiple internships with The Washington Post (Washington, D.C.) and The Star-Ledger (New Jersey). She also covered federal politics for The Durango Herald and The Cortez Journal (Colorado) as an intern.

To date, she has chased: three bears, one wallaby, one alligator, one baboon, one peacock and scores of ponies.
